Having a button combo for older hipchecks makes much more sense - I totally agree with that, I just really didn't like the specific one they used because it was very unintuitive and hindered your play.
Hipchecks definitely should have been tuned for single button use so we'll just have to see how today's patch addresses that. I personally think they added the Michigan to TC exactly because it was so hard to do and felt like it was a waste (which it was at the time) adding it.
Also, Hybrid and 94 controls actually did have their advantages - especially when it came to faceoffs. Not a perfect system by any means but makes for a decent all in one setting that can be further tweaked.

Hybrid and 94 faceoff was indeed their only advantage, it's not really comparable to what you get with total control though. And after 2-3 faceoff you could almost tell if they were using the old controls, all we had to do was to start using counters and they were screwed, not so much of an advantage in the end.
