One way to help keep them in position is to make sure the human controlled players are staying in position. When anyone is out of position, it means the other players need to move around to cover the open ice. This means the AI players aren't always in the best position to make a play.
Of course, there are still times AI players are going to make mistakes. They are trying to replicate humans after all.
There should, at the very least, be an option to turn off the AI covering for you when you are "out of position".
As a 3v3 player I am quite literally forced to get "out of position" and be everywhere all at once. I'm convinced they use 6v6 logic there too so it only makes things worse.
Having them take unsportsmanlike penalties on the other side of the rink in no way replicates my human playstyle.
