Nothing is built into the game to force goals to happen near the end. The best you can do to avoid these is play better defense. If this is happening in a single player mode, be aware that if your team is down, the AI will fight harder to come back. They'll play more aggressive. This doesn't guarantee they will score though.

I'm sorry man, I'm not buying that. It happens way too much, not just this year, but for years. You dominate an entire game then a cheesy goal happens. You can defend it, doesnt mean its true.

And you can believe whatever you like, doesn't mean it's true.
The people who make the game are telling you that your imagined catch-up logic does not exist.
What does exist is the fact that the CPU will adjust in-game strategies and apply more pressure to get the tying goal.
If you're not adjusting your strategies near the end of the game to combat this, you're playing the game wrong.

Ok. We can agree to disagree then. There is nothing specifically built into the game to cause late 3rd period goals. If this happens to you consistently, make sure you're adjusting your strategies as KidShowtime1867 mentioned.
Which mode is this happening in? If you're playing against the AI, play very defensively in your zone. Cut off passing lanes as much as possible. They are looking for open lanes for shots and passes and are good at finding them. Chances are good their aggressive playing will lead to a turnover from a block.
