It's obviously an incredibly unpopular change. If there are any players out there who think it's a good move I'd be shocked.
But at this point is seems a pretty safe bet that taking away the matchmaking settings from the players and moving them server-side was an intentional move by EA and not a bug to be fixed. It also appears that EA is completely unwilling to communicate why this change was made.
The only reasons I can think of are
- It makes the searching less taxing on the back end.
- It "streamlines" the UX and makes the matchmaking "less confusing".
- Somebody thought that it would lower the search time and result in players finding games quicker.
None of these seem like a good reason to strip players of their agency. And none of them seem like something that EA can't or won't explain to the player base. So I have to assume there's some other reason I'm missing.
