I'm using total control but still use the right stick to check. Is it necessary to use the B/circle to get the proper timing?

Community ManagerYou can still hit with the right stick. Up or tapping B/Circle is a shove and down+up (holding down B/Circle) is a shoulder check. You still need proper timing for both. You should be making contact when on the upswing of the stick or when holding down the button.
