Thanks everyone.
I just watched a video showing the Springfield Guide page by page, and it didn't show a map of SF drawn by MG. So i don't understand why anyone is basing their town layout on that one big map someone else made, which is also completely arbitrary.
My layout with the Square in the center is guided by my experience with towns I've lived in, like Seaside, NJ, Wilmington, NC, Atlanta, GA, and Marietta, GA. It attempts to follow a logical progression of development typical of many small, pre-civil war era towns.
Towns usually develop areas based on commerce and economics, where the retail goes uptown while the industry goes south of downtown. I focused on developing how i thought history would have provided the buildings, rather than when released by EA's game script. I think it makes for a very realistic layout.
The decorations are the fun part, particularly overcoming the limits of the game mechanics. Placing greenery to modify the size of pavement is critical to forcing realism: rounding corners, slimming paths widening driveways and sizing parking lots large enough.
The 3-D aspect which forum members have developed as a gaming "sub-challenge", became another favorite part for me. I chose not to overdo it, but my four features seem to have turned out well.
Now i can finally relax and add new features as they become available. I'm looking forward to not obsessing over this game as much. And i appreciate the pace set by the SC event as i reach this point. TSTO has been a very fun diversion for me since Halloween. It's been an interesting 9 months. i guess i should take a shower and get a job...
