You've gotten some good advice, and Drosax's pic should prove a good model (love the use of canons!).
Perhaps it'll be useful to remember that you're trying to trick the minds of people viewing, as Anna pointed out, by using game items to imitate drawings. For instance, the fences in Drosax's pic are like the shaded area in this pic (a near random Google image I just found in a search):

You'll get the hang of it in no time, and remember that there is no "right" way of doing 3D since we're all deliberately using items in the "wrong" way. Just keep in mind that you're trying to trick people into seeing a 3D image the same way artists do. The difference is you're using fences, walls, hedges, etc. instead of paint, ink, charcoal, etc.
