Quickly: Barry, I've been sorely tempted to appropriate (a nicer word than steal) your double-fence method. It's just so unique I couldn't bring myself to do it.
I'll add that hedges are tricky. Sometimes they behave like cobblestone walls (you can overlap them to form a v but not a ^, and you can combine them with fences without any gaps showing). Other times, you can't. In my town right now, I can't use hedges to do a pit design but I can use cobblestone walls. After every update I check since I want to finish a couple designs.
Edit: While I was typing this, Maxim posted his great design. For those interested in this sort of thing, I'll mention that the way the cobblestone overlaps the fence in the far right corner is not possible in my game with hedges. Not now, but it has been in the past. This is why I was cautioning against hedges, but I see it wasn't necessary.
