Are Streets Necessary?

Am I wrong when I say, that one single street right through the middle of Springfield will be enough, since every character returns to it after the job/quest is done and all builidngs are accessable without streets as well?

I had my sons' abandoned town like this, it was nothing but rivers and just a couple of little docks here and there. It gets boring very quickly. The design ability is lacking. They always returned to the small docks.

I like having rivers and bridges all over my town, I love those bridge lights. I also have a ton of sidewalks although the knuckle heads never use them (pavement next to the roads).
