There's actually quite a few topics about this actually. There's a very good collection on pages 2 and 3.

Basically, upgrading Monsarno to a point first is the best bet, as that increases your payouts of crafting materials, although it doesn't feel that way, I know. It's also partly a personal choice based on what you want to do. Personally I'm upgrading Monsarno to level 17, so that everybody possible can have a job, and I stopped the Herbicide upgrading pretty early. Level 7 I think? If you find the topic that details exactly what's required for each upgrade and what you gain from it, you can see discussions on the best bet, and also all the information to make your own informed decision!!

I started the event late tho. It'll take forever to continue the questline and by the time i get the farmer's market, i fear it'll be too close to the end of the even to be worth it

Well as you say that you were a little late starting the event then it might be worth checking out the walk through list that shows what you get at what upgrade level and decided from that a suitable upgrade level to stop at that gives reasonable balance on returns for the level and also give you a chance to also craft some of the prizes that you might want.
