I agree. When I first started off, you definitely got the sense that you got some donuts from leveling up, and some of the startup quests, but after that the well would run dry. The implementation of a slow but steady trickle of donuts has definitely re-invigorated my interest in the game!
Great opening post by MaxxSpider outlining the ways we can get donuts. You could add to that list the new XP collider/level up method which would give you maybe 9-21 donuts per level, but obviously only if you are a player with a maxed out town.
