If I'm understanding you correctly everyone should have started friends battles by now.
It also seems that if you look at the friend leaderboard a red bar means with zero means they haven't downloaded the event yet. If it is half red half green with zero then they are playing but haven't battled yet.
Isn't there a forced update?
In my friend's list are a few players who played yesterday, but apparently they don't even have the Orphan Alley and when I visit them I can't see how many trading cards or knuckles I currently have...
