I had it for a few days and came back with an extra 15 donuts, not the payoff I had hoped for, but better than nothing I guess.

The latter. Around when level 26 was released, and the Valentine's Day Event was going on like Donkey Kong, some players were unable to get in their game, and when they tried to access their town it would play the sound of a harp playing (also the sound of the level up message) and it would loop indefinitely. Some people had the technical know how on how to fix it, but they required your account login, and while most honestly fixed your game, there were 2 or 3 known scammers. Soon, EA fixed it and gave some players who had the bug compensation donuts.
