Forum Discussion
- This story is 4 months old and I remember when it first happened that it was discussed here. The universal opinion seemed to be that it was the result of lazy parenting and that the money should not have been refunded. Some even said that it was probably the parents who did it and are just using the kid as a way to get out of it.
'She got a statement and saw there were more than 100 purchases on iTunes for between £1.50 and £75, from the middle of January and the beginning of this month.
'We received no emails alerting us to what was happening.'
Mr Rowland-Fry said it is too easy for children to buy additional items without being asked for any more details to confirm the purchase.
They went 2 months without balancing their checking account and seeing the purchases. They disabled purchase notifications in the iTunes Store (the default is that you are sent a receipt every time you buy something). They turned off the password in their iTunes Store (the default is that it asks for a password when making an in-app purchase).
The parents are at fault because this is not a matter of ignorance to the way these things work, this is somebody going in and manually changing defaults.
Yes, I am aware that you make a purchase and it stays for a few minutes but even then the parents authorized a payment and for this amount to have racked up? They turned off the password protection. - Yeah this was a while ago
I know your from the land down under but i didn't realise you guys were soo far behind on certain things http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b453/daspares/Daspares/Emoticon38.gif - S'what those parents get for giving kids technology, that I never got when I was kid. :P

LOL if I remember correctly, you were the one who said it was the parent's who did it. You even have a running joke where you will say "I'll just say my kid did it!"
So now people who weren't around for this discussion will know what that means, lol.- And that's why parents need to monitor their kids when they are online

Or put the fear of God into them....
Our 10 year old bought himself an iPad mini last Christmas with his own money. It is tied to my iTunes (which by the way only accepts gift card payments.....) and I've told him that if charges anything to it that I will take it out of his allowance with interest. He does not like giving up his own money so he's never even tried to buy anything. I also took the time to walk him through apps and show him what costs money and what doesn't.
Again....lazy parenting.
That article quotes the parents as stating that they don't have the time to monitor their child online. Then they shouldn't be online! Period.lissarv68 wrote:

Damn right the parents did it! Lol all a big scam!
There plenty of security measures you can put on the apple devices to stop that from happening, if you going to let your kid have your password then nobodies fault but theirs  I find the whole thing too funny tbh - Until it actually happens to you, you dont have a clue.
Its happened to my gf, my daughter ran up £932 on stupid little in app purchases on little games designed for her that we didnt know where there.
Now im a pretty techy guy and i didnt even look at it properly, now that it has happened we r def alot more stringent and tried to explain to her about money online and purchases. - Both my kids play on our old iPhones...buying apps / in game purchases are disabled! If at any stage they want a new game or whatever I then download it for them, if it does cost money i walk away with the phone so they cant see the password!
Plus I change it regularly just in case ;) lol - P.s she has to ask us now to download games for her and she doesnt know the password and there is a block on in app purchases.
