I wouldn't say I hate Carl, but the dialogue they've given him is way too deep for his character. It's like they got sloppy with the element of the kid having to grow up fast and just threw some more profound lines his way. They developed his character in an entirely different way and now everything seems forced.
This also lends into what I was saying about most of the characters being portrayed as weak. Even the kid is emerging as a more natural/stronger leader than anyone else.
