Agree with you 100%. I can see animals as additions to the town and enjoy having them there. Any with tasks as very nice bonuses. But I don't like with walking characters without any tasks, they just frustrate me. I keep my zombies in storage, but have them out for Halloween, and I like them at that time. And of course, I have Brandine pregnant and am ok with the spuckler's since they at least earn money. Same with the Leprechauns, at least they are tappable for money and XP. They only decent thing I can say about Candy Kevin is that you could exchange Valentine's with him during that event. But that's it.
