I think, in addition to Cecil's daily tasks, the Research Center pays out in shovels, and each completed task in the quest line does as well. I think there's also something about squishing mutant plants, but I'm not there yet.

    You get 7 shovels from every whatchamacallit mutant vegetable (looks like a cornstalk) that you tap in your own town.

    Those show up sort of like the agents and bunnies ... a certain number every hour, a maximum in your town at any one time, etc. :)

    Just being picky here - they're called Trowels. A common hand gardening tool. The genetically engineered plants are being grown indoors, presumably in tubs.

    ^^lol! You also get them visiting neighbors, but only up to a certain number of visits.
