I know this comment will probably provoke disagreement from some, but I see the evolution of Smithers' character as emblematic of the problems with the series as a whole. The episodes used to feature more nuanced characters that behaved according to the dictates of the plot; now the episodes are little more than a sequence of relatively unfunny gags in which character and plot are largely secondary.
