I know this comment will probably provoke disagreement from some, but I see the evolution of Smithers' character as emblematic of the problems with the series as a whole. The episodes used to feature more nuanced characters that behaved according to the dictates of the plot; now the episodes are little more than a sequence of relatively unfunny gags in which character and plot are largely secondary.
Since I've started playing TSTO I've tried to watch a few new episodes. A couple of times I've gotten to the last commercial break and instead of fast forwarding through the commercials to see the end of the episodes I've just found something else to watch. It's very disappointing. Maybe they should have stopped making new episodes 13 or 14 years ago. It's been a mediocre show now for longer than it was a great show, and that's pretty sad.
