I feel like the only ball they dropped is not pulling the tasks which became unavailable to us. Example: It listed kids could still spawn nightmares from the fire, when they were changing over to brow...

Exactly what I do except with 5 houses, thinking of doing 6. 5 stopped randomly Nightmares coming out my Campfire instead.
The only thing to add would be there is no bank in Act 3, you can only hold 20 in game Nightmares.
I also re-task the kids after clearing each house, makes it easier to spread the load between houses without having to think each time who goes where.
