I can't put my player in the TOTS upgrade evolution

I packed fut birthday Sol Campbell from an icon player pick and I put him in the anticipate+ evolution. Then I thought: if I put him in the TOTS+ evolution for 35.000 coins, will he become a Team of the Season and therefore be eligible for the TOTS upgrade evolution? So I tried it and it says he is eligible for the TOTS upgrade evolution but when I tried to put him in it says: "There was a problem connecting to the Football Ultimate Team servers. Please try again later." So I tried it on the web app and there I also got an error. I think it doesn't work because he wasn't originally a Team of the Season card but I think I should be able to put him in and the evolution isn't really useful for any max 93 TOTS card anyway (at least for me).
