Since its launch, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare has brought the Backyard Battleground to life for millions of players. From epic Garden Ops sessions to all-out multiplayer mayhem between Plants and Zombies, this community helped grow something special.

Today, we have an important update to share.

As we continue updating our online services, we’ve reached a point where the PlayStation 3 version can no longer support the changes we need to make. Because of this, online services for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare  on PlayStation 3 will sunset and be permanently discontinued on April 28, 2026.

PS3 was home to many of the earliest backyard battles, and we’re incredibly grateful to the players who’ve been with us since the beginning.

The good news is that Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare (and Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2) remain fully playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 (GW), Xbox One, and PC, and are not affected. Players on those platforms can continue the fight between Plants and Zombies without interruption.

To our Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare players who have supported us since the early days on PS3, thank you for your longstanding support. Your battles, strategies, and backyard moments mean everything to us.

  • PS3 user here. I haven't played the game, but I don't think I will manage to get the trophies to April 28 because of the time consumption they take. But my questions are:

Why only PS3 and not Xbox 360 per se? For example, NFS Rivals was shut down months ago. The service update page (A-Z) listed "PlayStation 4, Xbox 1 (One, sic), and PC" but never mentioned PS3 or 360, but eventually was closed for all platforms (unsensical thing to me, you could've closed it down on PS3 and 360 and left PS4, PC and Xbox One active). And now why PVZ GW is only closing on PS3? I don't see the sense of it, to be honest. For that, you should say "both 7th gen versions will close" and not a specific version of the game. Just, why?😑

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 being on Steam is enough tho.

I'll be honest, I think this is a mistake. It's very strange that they decided to do this on the PS3 and only on PS3 because Garden Warfare 1 on PS3 is still an extremely active game even today in 2026. (Not to mention that, unlike the Xbox 360 version, you can still buy things since the store is still active and both the console and the game on the store is pretty cheap nowdays.)

Whenever I logged in, I could find full lobbies with people, some even using voice chat every day. I'd even say there are more people playing GW1 on PS3 than on PS4, Xbox 360/One, and heck, even more than GW2 on PC.

I even got the PS3 version to get the platinum trophy last year:

I think this marks the beginning of the end for Garden Warfare 1. The PS3 version was definitely the most active; I don't see people abandoning GW2 or BFN on PS4/Xbox One/PC to go back to GW1, and there simply aren't many people on Xbox 360 these days.

It's really strange that they're disabling it on PS3 and not on Xbox 360 considering that the PS3 store is still active and you can still buy the game there (that's how I got the game last year) and there are many more active players on the PS3 version than on the Xbox 360 version.

I also played the game on PS4 and PC, and I'd even say the PS3 version is more active than those two versions, no joke.

They should at least allow progress from the PS3 version to be transferred to the PS4 version, since game progress is linked to PSN; this would certainly motivate some players to migrate platforms.

Garden Warfare 2 on PC is practically unplayable nowadays because of hackers.

On Xbox One and PS4, not only do you have many more active players, but you also don't have this hacker problem.

Dang... Is there at least word on what time the servers will shut down on that date?

I know, I was talking to Lamb642 on Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 1 being on Steam, when the SECOND Garden Warfare game is on Steam and features basically more content than GW1.
