Re: SimCity on macOS Catalina

Hi @juzbrien - Kudos on thinking ahead before you install Catalina! Unfortunately, there is no update or patch from EA for SimCity 2013. As it is now a legacy game, EA will probably not be issuing any patches to make it 64-bit.

If you purchased the game from Aspyr, they have indicated that they will be porting most of their 32-bit titles to 64-bit versions https://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000214186-MacOS-Catalina-64-bit-32-bit-and-related-Questions. SimCity is not on the "removed" list, so I am assuming it will be available as 64-bit for Catalina. (Be aware Aspyr's version is single player only)

If you want to continue to play SimCity while updating to MacOS Catalina, you have a couple of choices. You can create a bootable external drive running Mohave, install a virtual machine running Mohave, or consider bootcamping your Mac and installing Windows.

Here is an excellent breakdown by @Bluebellflora  of How to Run 32-bit Apps after a Catalina Upgrade. In this post, your choices are clearly outlined, and detailed instructions are given for dealing with this transition. I hope this helps you decide how to go forward with your upgrade. Happy Building!

There's a SimCity Complete Edition on AppStore in Catelina version.

    Does that work?

I don't know for sure if it has been converted to 64-bit or not. The newest information I have seen is in this post, updated on Oct 9 : https://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000214186-MacOS-Catalina-64-bit-32-bit-and-related-Questions where it says that SimCity is a "planned update" to 64-bit.

Your best bet is to ask Aspyr if SimCity has been updated to 64-bit.

@paradise2019 Aspyr (the company you can purchase from the app store) is going to be converting it to 64-bit soon, but as of right now if you purchase it, it's still 32-bit and unable to be played )-:
  • i have seen Aspyr mentioned several times on the internet, did they purchase simcity? anyone know?

So what i understand from this comments is that there will not be a patch or a fix to turn the Simcity game into 64bits. Am i right? cuz i bought mine on EA i think (it was not on App Store) and now i can't play because i have Catalina. Sims 4 i can play with no problem but i kinda wanted to play Simcity so idk what to do.

@reza_rahman478 - You're talking about SimCity: Complete Edition on the App Store, right? Aspyr recently updated that version to 64-bit. Glad to hear that it is working, thanks for letting us know.

So there is no way to play SimCity via Origin on MacOS Catalina?

No, not at this time I'm sorry to say. SimCity is a 32 bit program, which Catalina doesn't support. (EDIT: I say "not at this time" because EA has never officially announced that they will or won't change it. However, be aware that SimCity is a legacy game; there is no active dev team nor have there been any patches or updates to the game since 2015)

You have to find a way to install/play on an OS that supports 32-bit programs (some choices and step-by-steps on BluebellFlora's blog). Aspyr has updated their version to work in 64-bit, but it it's single player/offline only gameplay. You wouldn't be able to play on EA servers.

@reza_rahman478 I just downloaded the game today on Origin and am still stuck on the finalizing/install loop. How did you get it to download?
  • @pard24 I bought the app store version. The only way to make the Origin version work is to install bootcamp and install Windows and Origin (windows edition).
I also have the Origin version too, but i got fed waiting for an update.

Hi @maltetrippo  -  Apple dropped support for 32-bit games like SimCity, beginning with MacOS Catalina 10.15. There is more information in this post: https://answers.ea.com/t5/SimCity-2013/Mac-SimCity-and-MacOS-Catalina/m-p/8298578#M127940 , including some options for running 32-bit games after upgrading to Catalina.

If you have the EA / Origin version of SimCity, you cannot run it on MacOS Catalina 10.15 or later. As of this writing, in March 2020, EA has not announced any plans to update it to 64-bit. If you have the Aspyr version from the Mac App Store, it has been updated to run on 64 bit operating systems.

Both companies' games install fully patched to the most recent version. There are no additional updates to install.

There is no update for SimCity through EA or Origin; it will not run on MacOS Catalina. Your only choices are to install an earlier MacOS or to buy the App Store version, as explained in the first post in this thread
