Re: Motion controls on Switch(handheld)

I just tried out the Switch version. For the hardware it runs pretty well, thanks for the effort 🙂. As a frequent player of Switch games though the motion controls need some work. I can barely move the camera horizontally even at the default max horizontal sensitivity. There are also times where it seems like a right motion causes the camera to move left and vice-versa

@Syntheseize thank you for letting us know about this, to check are you using a pro controller or the default side controllers?

    Hi,

The new port of the game for the nintendo switch is very impressive but I've had an issue with the motion control which make the game about unplayable at the moment.

It seems the developers implemented gyro control differently from the Y to the X axe and this makes things very clunky in game. The Y motion controls uses ''pitch'' as its axis of rotation while the X axis uses ''roll'' instead of ''yaw''. This means the controller doesn't read movements of a pivot around the player from side to side only on the x axis. The only way to look left/right is to rotate the whole console on itself clockwise/counter-clockwise like a steering wheel. Having the whole display tilting from one side to another in this manner takes me completely out of the experience as I have to remember a very unnatural way to aim but only for one of the axis of movement.

I hope this issue is resolved soon as every new player on switch will have the motion controls on by default and this will most likely give a bad impression of these controls.

Will this issue be fixed with an upcoming update?

  • I use a pro controller when on TV, and tabletop which works fine.

the motion controls on joycons(handheld) is the problem.

you need to roll the whole console for horizontal aiming/look instead of yaw that you mostly use in games with motion controls on handheld (take BOTW or Warframe for example)

there are few things which gives problem in aiming as well:

    - the aiming is auto-calibrating(?) itself, and i have to readjust my aim every time since it moves by itself (checked the joycons itself, and it only happens on apex)

    - small adjustments is very crucial for aiming which the game doesn't have. you need to turn the controllers a lot for the motion control to take effect. a small and slow movement on controller wont be registered as a motion input which makes long range aim hard

    - the movement of the motion controls while aiming long range is not smooth its like (. . . . . . .) instead of (-----------) which means it only moves point to point and snaps to that point instead of a "flow" movement

i hope my explanation is somehow clear.

    thank you for responding

Same issues I encountered with motion controls. I use pro controller mostly. They way I use motion controls is like something that replaces the right analog stick. most of my camera movements and aim is done through motion control and the stick is just for big turns and 180 degree turns. These are my most problematic issues I am facing:

    • For no reason, after you steady after a swing of motion, the camera drifts in different direction. this is problematic for sniping to the point that I can't make a hit on longer distance.
    • Aim assist destroys the camera position with motion control. (Splatoon doesn't implement aim assist for this reason, Overwatch has aim assist strength and window size option to minimize intervention with motion control)
    • The inputs on gyro especially on look and aimdown sight camera movement on gyro doesn't feel straight. I played a lot of fps on switch with gyro but the input on apex feels like shaking and always goes off track.

  • Two things disappointed me when I tried Apex Legends: #1 - Blood effects (I made a post about this in the feed "Blood," because I will not be playing Apex at all until there is an option to turn off blood. I'm in my upper teens so this is not just a youngin' talking. I know that's not what this feed is about, but please see my perspective in the feed "Blood"! Thank you.) and #2 - Motion controls for Switch. I accidentally started a feed on this without realizing this had already been started. I would love to see a "yaw" or "tilt" option for motion controls as opposed to the current "roll" motion controls (that is, of course, if blood effects get the option to be turned off and I can play at all, lol.)

  • @EA_Illium I'm using pro controller, I know and I've realized that, when you implemented the gyro motion for the switch, it was meant to get used like the Wii controller in that nunchuk way, it was a great idea but, I'm sure, theres a lot of people like me who avoids that way with the joycons cause the joystick drift is just too anoying and that's why we tend to play with the pro controller making the experience better and more comfortable. That thing is, that wheel gyro motion in the pro controller isnt, in my personal opinion, the best mode for this controller because we are used to and we just have the influence for many other games that uses the jaw gyro mode in the nintendo switch making this way really, and I mean really, anoying to play in this apex for nintendo switch game. I really have fun with that game and I already spent some money in it cause the designs of the characters and weapons are really sick, the game is just frenetic and this arena mode is just way more fun that I thought. Only this gyro aiming makes the experience anoying and is a real pity because when it has the jaw gyro aiming the game would be just so damn perfect in all the ways! Except for the cosmetics that are a little expensive.. but when we talk about the gaming experience it would be just perfect and I mean every letter when I say perfect! I play with my brother who is in the other side of the world and we meet to play this game, is really sad that I cant enjoy it like I enjoy playing with him fortnite or splatoon just because of that little detail that makes a huge difference.
Sorry for the long speech but I really need, and I know I theres a lot of people who claims the same, that u dont ignore and forget this issue and the people of this community who would be more than thankful and will play the game 24/7 if u just finally hear us and make an option in the settings to choose between wheel and jaw mode for the gyro aiming.
Sorry again for the bad english and have a nice day.
  • Hello, i wanted to say thank you for hearing us and implemented the jaw gyro mode instead of the wheel one, the game feels way better than before and all I can say is THANK U!

By the other hand, I wish u could do the same with the pro controller cause u just did the change for the portable mode and, to be honest, I'm getting kind of blind of spending so much hours with my eyes on that little screen and, to be realistic, the joycons with those tiny analog sticks are not the best to play a shooter at all.. I know u know what I mean..

Dont misunderstand me please, I'm really grateful with the change u did after hearing us and what we needed, but I think the game will be way more fun and practical to play if both, handheld and dock, are able to play in the same best way possible, in this case, both with jaw gyro mode, that would be just perfection and u wont hear about me for a while, I promise 😄.

Thanks for your time people, I became a real fan of your game and your creativity ❤.

Thanks for your time and have a nice day ✌🏽
