This often happens to me if the opponents came out of the smoke or were very close to it. Moreover, they did not always turn black, but often on the border from the beginning of the thermal vision and the end of the smoke itself. Initially, I saw this in a regular game, but I could not understand why this was happening until I started using smoke a lot.
There might be some kind of glitch in the object handling that determines if an object is in smoke or not. In addition, repeated aiming does not always "update" this script, it happens that even after that, those opponents that were already black do not become "visible" in the thermal sight.

@pecmeserp, cheers for the video. Passing it on. This happens to me often as well. I wouldn't say the players turn completely black. Instead the thermal scope is tinted so some players are simply not highlighted and blend in to the tinted surroundings. It's rare that it happens but very annoying because you can be aiming down scope shooting people and then you see a shadow shoot at you.
