Probably not natively but Valve's proton is sounding promising for compatibility with windows games.
Directly from Dice, not as far as i know, but Valve are working on getting battleye and EAC working under proton (their wine version for the steam deck) so it should be possible once/if Valve gets EAC running.
If a native client is released then there's already native EAC support, but afaik there's no linux client coming.
Can track it here if you're interested;
The problem i see here is that steam seems only to launch origin.
- carsono3114 years agoSeasoned Ace@Player55 No. The Linux operating system will not be directly supported.
Linux support for this game is needed and should be available without using Steam.
Just a quick update to this thread and other linux-related ones as i saw this earlier today.

So, that should in theory mean proton/wine and BF2042 is a go.
- carsono3114 years agoSeasoned Ace@Fringerunner Good catch. Sounds solution-worthy to me…!

@frantayps I've been out of the Linux game since I returned to gaming but does Wine or a similar program allow Origin to launch? I swore that @StarscreamUK was gaming on Linux.
@ragnarok013Was going to just type it out, but the fact that it turns out forbes has done a linux gaming faq i just have to...

Also, re Origin;

(short short version, yes)- @Fringerunner Thanks for the links, I actually reinstalled Ubuntu to mess around with in a VM this week.
Yea, now that EAC is confirmed and Battleye is (probably) next to be confirmed, I'll be doing some testing of my own soon.
Only problem is my old testbed is now a 9-year old's gaming PC, and getting her off slime rancher and FFXIV is not going to be pretty.
(thankfully, she has no idea what dual boot is and can't throw that back at me. Yet.)
- @Fringerunner Ah my old friend dual boot! My only issue back in the day was Grub overwriting the normal Windows booter creating issues once in a while with my Windows installation.
Exactly 👿
Hence why the 9-year old will stay completely ignorant of that option until i figure out if it'll brick the bootloader on my own box or not!
Might just save us both some trouble and test it on a VM on my nas just to see if it runs first, i think playable framerates are out of the question on a 7-year old opteron with integrated graphics even if it was running native. (and i think asking for a unix/truenas client might be pushing it).

@ragnarok013@FringerunnerSo are you guys trying to run it natively within a Linux distro or within a VM? I had not considered some of the use cases you have mentioned…
edit - I think @Fringerunner just answered my question.. lol
@ragnarok013 it was running fine with lutris 2 years ago, dont think that changed. Only problem was EA / DICE banning linux players.
See working BF titels here:
https://www.youtube.com/c/GloriouseggrollTv/search?query=battlefield
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzzYFh7ro2A
for reference.
Since then the Lutris team with Gloriouseggroll on board pushed it very hard and it got better with every update.
Problems i had back in the day where 25% less performance then on a native windows and Origin pushing out Beta Clients which broke the wine / origin install every 2-3 weeks (complete reinstall only fixed that).
And this is where i see the problem, as far as i see it, steam only launches origin when you start battlefield.
- @frantayps The banhammer part is correct, i wasn't dabbling anymore either at the time but a couple of posters have confirmed it in other posts asking for linux support.
FWIW Origin is listed as silver atm so shouldn't be an issue, can't confirm (yet) from personal experience though.
Seems valve got EAC pushed through as promised, should be fun to see some benchmarks in the future to see what the performance overhead is vs windows now in quite a few games.
Got about zero interest in the steam deck itself, but got to give them some kudos for the side effects of it's development. - StarscreamUK4 years agoHero (Retired)
yes @ play a lot on linux. (I weirdly got better performance on bfv on linux than on windows (thanks vulkan 🙂 ) but eac had always been an issue, if it all pans out, then windows can be forgotten about as far as I go. It's only for the oddball titles than Im using win 11 atm....
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/battleye-anti-cheat-confirms-steam-deck-support/
And that's two.
Might see if i can get destiny 2 running since it uses battleye now while waiting for the BF beta, though the "opt in" part seems... odd.
Guess I'll be checking if Bungie has "opted in" before i risk the account!

@StarscreamUK what are you using, proton, wine etc?
- StarscreamUK4 years agoHero (Retired)
mainly proton, but for anyone wanting to try and unsure, use lutris, it handles most of the installs and dependencies.
To be frankly I am not going to install Windows back just for this game, so I will not buy it untill/unless Linux would be supported one way or another.
- @Noodlesocks Oh, it absolutely *is* "promising" indeed. I find more and more games in my Steam library just work upon clicking "Play" despite some of those games being absolutely *ancient*, and others being "Windows-only" games. Valve and the WINE/Proton teams have done positively amazing things in recent years.
- @carsono311 So Valve's Steam Deck won't be able to play it? That's a dumb choice. Is EA just lazy? Actually you don't have to answer that, I already know the answer
we at least know now that it works without EAC
- carsono3114 years agoSeasoned Ace@BeAstykid654 I don’t think they are lazy, but definitely bit off more than they can chew.
