Re: Performance option for console versions?

DICE's Battlefield 2042 (XBox Series X) runs at 4k 60 fps on the Frostbite engine - I would hope that EA developers could manage the same for PGA Tour.  If it means sacrificing a little video fidelity I'm okay with that!  Oh, BTW, I'll be playing on Series X.

Well it's a 4k 60 Hz target but it holds up well most of the time. F1 22 runs at 4k 60 Hz too actually, with a basically locked frame rate but scope for resolution to drop a little at times. Neither use ray tracing in gameplay though whereas it appears that PGA Tour does and managing 60 Hz with this in use seems a step too far on current gen machines. Personally I'd much rather have 60 Hz than ray tracing though!

Nice to hear from you SouthernSNIDELY!  Battlefield 2042 is a great example of a Frostbite game being able to handle 4K at 60 FPS.  If I'm not mistaken, Madden 23 and FIFA 23 run at 60 FPS in 4K on the Series X.

Thanks JC, always enjoy reading your posts.  Really looking forward to this title.  Hopefully the gameplay presentation and cameras will provide more than what 2K is offering right now.  I do enjoy the Golf Club series, but it certainly lacks in real feel of tournament golf.

Although 4k @ 60 Hz with ray-tracing is not something the hardware seems to be capable of.

The following question and answer from the link below makes me more worried that consoles won't have an option other than 30 Hz ☹️. I really hope this doesn't turn out to be the case as it would be a huge let down.

OS: As we understand it, consoles will be capped at 30FPS. Will the PC version be uncapped or allow 60FPS?

@Ultrasonic_77That's a bummer. It's also quite a shame with the latest Frostbite engine and with the new generation consoles supporting well over 30 frames. I have the series s, I would love to have 1440p at 60 or 90 FPS. Hopefully soon after post launch there may be an upgrade.

Makes you wonder why they just made this for next gen consoles only, when it's going to run 1080p at 30🤔

For what it's worth I believe it's going to be 4k @30 Hz but not the right trade off for me as discussed above.

(It feels very odd talking to someone with the same avatar by the way!)

Even so, this still could run on Xbox One or PS4, performance-wise frame rate and resolution, and if you're playing a console with a monitor like I am, there's a lot of people that aren't going to spend the money for a 4K monitor.  TV surely.

I would still hold off and not pre-order. Not sure if you were or not. I can almost validate a pre order if they offered the game at a discounted price, or some other feasible offers.  Me personally, I'm going to wait out the 6 weeks and see what we have, reviews, options, gameplay, multiplayer, etc.

If as seems likely the game will launch at 30 Hz only then I suppose it's always possible that a performance mode could be added later on. It must be possible to make changes to facilitate this.

As I've said above I think one major factor is ray tracing. 

I wonder if there's any chance that the game physics really has advanced to the point that the last gen CPUs would have struggled?

True. It was experiencing the change this brought that makes me seriously disappointed if EA PGA Tour won't be able to do the same. This being a post-launch update for 2k21 makes more sense as this was much earlier in the current-gen lifecycle, where such updates were much more the norm. I honestly find it much harder to justify on a current-gen only release in 2023. 

I suspect there's pretty widespread disappointment in this revelation. YouTuber GamerAbility released a video essentially to highlight the console frame-rate problem yesterday, with the video basically just going through the article above but adding his thoughts. I've not gone hunting through various social media but I bet this will not be a popular announcement in general which really does feel to me like it will negatively affect sales if not addressed.

I simply won't buy games that don't run at 60fps in 2023.

Sounds melodramatic but 30fps gives me a headache. Lower the res and give me 60fps. Almost no one (on console) is sitting close enough to see the difference between 4K and 1440 or even 1080 anyway so to prioritise that over gameplay affecting things like framerate is mad.

I was excited for this but it's gone from must buy to avoid.
