Because you can access the session settings in the game mode. As long as you don’t exit the mode it applies.
Keyboard is ESC then ‘Track and Time Selection (can’t recall exactly)’ but you can change setting to Equal and it should hold until you exit TT.
Just exactly how I change for Realistic / Official time of day. e.g. night race at Singapore TT is always set to Midday, so I change it.

That still exits the session and starts a new one. There's no way to apply any settings from the "car and track selection" menu without it restarting the session and thus reverting the performance setting.

@SteveJacksonThank for replying, maybe I explained myself wrong.
I tried to change the setting in "Track and Time Selection" but you have to press "Confirm settings" to make changes effective.
And when you confirm, it automatically exit the session and launch a new one when car performance are Realistic... so actually this also is not working - SteveJackson2 years agoHero (Retired)

I think it's what the option is defaulting to within that screen as all the other settings changed (I tried BAH from Midday (Default) to Official and it changed).
I'll try the lap again after setting Realistic and let you know. I'm not fast only in the 1:30s and I used the same setup from my old TT.
Edit: I'm no super driver but with the same setup on Realistic I've had three attempts to clear the lap and I've had traction events each time, the car is different. Perhaps someone else can verify who is a bit better but it feels like a totally different car, down on top speed and no traction / rear downforce.

@SteveJacksonI was practicing for league race yesterday in Suzuka, driving Williams (it's my team in the league).
I was 0.8 seconds slower than my PB after turn 1-2, losing many tenths just driving on the main straight, so pretty confident even based on feeling it was a realistic performance car (setup was the same of my PB).
I'll try testing on other tracks to see if it's different, but for sure there was a bug yesterday.
Furthermore it seems to be something random because other drivers in my championship have not encountered it.
Thank you very much for testing and comparing, I'll keep you up-to-date. - SteveJackson2 years agoHero (Retired)

Thank you very much anyway for testing and comparing, I'll keep you up-to-date.We’re not saying it’s not bugged but I seem to think that the workaround is to do what I suggested, simply set the equal performance to ON the first time you land in the mode and it should be set. It will stick with until you restart the game but the screen will always say realistic when you look at it. I think if you proceed on Realistic from that screen it IS Realistic, so toggle it on each time you change tracks.
Anyway I’m given to understand this issue is tracked, but I hope it is patched one more time.

I tested this potential workaround extensively last night and I can assure you that the car is not the equal performance car. I lose multiple tenths on the straights starting laps with my PB setup when I should at least be staying equal. Not only that but I know how the car is supposed to feel and it feels vastly different than what the equal performance car does. Also, switching between the teams also yields a different feeling in the handling of the car so the workaround of applying the equal setting when you first enter a session does not seem to stick even though the other settings such as time of day do.
