Re: Allow Cross-Matchmaking with US East and West Servers

@bitcloudrzr

I don't find 120-140 ping which is about the average of my group I play with, to be "acceptable" to play on East Coast servers (all of us are located in the PNW US.).

IF they could reduce the latency to under 60-80 then this might be feasible, I personally don't like playing anywhere where my ping is over 40.

@Ironhead841 I get 30 in east and 80 in west, people that I know in your region are getting the opposite +10 so that is definitely not normal.

I don't know what data center you go through but me on the west coast go through the LA data center, the most congested data center I know of.

I assume due to our location that the server is probably in the Seattle area but I'm not 100% sure where it actually is.

Wherever the server is located we all average high 20s to low 40s ping-wise, mine stays pretty steady 30-34 ping.

But we have tried playing on East Coast servers and as a group our pings jumped to the 120s-140s so it's not like it's just one of us with a bad connection it happens to all of us and while we are geographically in roughly the same area (PNW as I said) we all live in different towns..

I know from many tracrt's that all my Southern California packets go through LA first then out from there. Many of my packet loss's come from the congested servers there "LA". I cannot say where the backbone is located in northern California though.

  • I have spent time figuring out what LAT and ALAT works best with my 50cal sniper main.  In summary, I back out if the server can't hold 50ms LAT AND 80ms ALAT, as the 50 cal has no aim assist, tiny enemy player hit box, and the most latency sensitive weapon in the game due to slow bullet speed and overly exaggerated bullet drop (nothing like the real world version).

Whatever changes Dice made recently, I'm guessing the limited/filtered regional servers as my ALAT has dropped from 60-160ms to 27-80ms for almost all AOW servers.  My K/D, hit percentage, and all out experience has went up exponentially with the better server/net code recently.

So I'd rather have issues with servers filling quickly or at all than have them fill instantly and then experience the "horrible referee" net code chaos...

I normally stick to portal as I can control my LAT/ALAT easier, but lately AOW is "portal like" with lower ALAT servers.  Dice knows at LAT and ALAT are important for a quality game experience online, and thus why they have graphs and statistics you can monitor in real time on your screen while playing.

Note that in portal, Dice warns you once your LAT gets hither than 61ms that your connection quality is poor.  Check out portal "All servers", rank by "Ping", and below are my "connection quality" ratings at the moment:

4 out of 4 bars green connection quality = 46ms (excellent quality gaming experience)

3 out of 4 bar green connection quality = 61ms (good quality gaming experience)

2 out of 4 bars orange connection quality = 138ms (poor quality gaming experience)

1 out of 4 bars red  connection quality = 156ms (terrible quality gaming experience)

Thus Dice warn you if your connection is above 61ms, the quality of your gaming experience will most likely suffer.  Thus avoid ALAT above 60-80ms as when other player's have poor connections, your gaming experience will suffer when fighting them even if your LAT is below say 50ms.  Unlike the "old days", low ping players don't get the advantage anymore against high ping players.  So try hard to avoid servers full numerous high ping players, which results in a higher ALAT number...

Below is an Internet fiber backbone map showing the West Coast is geologically isolated from central and eastern NA .  Central and Eastern players are much closer together and thus connect with lower latencies than Central and West Coast players.  So it gets tricky if East and West Coast are playing on the same server...best if those servers are located in Central NA to keep ALAT lower...
