Re: Helicopter controls

I loved the heli controls. Heli's felt responsive.

I sucked at them in BF4. Some heli pilots with 5 centuries worth of heli time want the controls to be retuned to janky and unresponsive so no one other than them has any interest in picking heli's in the deploy screen.

@BaronVonGoon well, every player has different preferences and also what they're used to from previous titles.

This is your opinion and I'm glad you like it that way it is now.

But nothing would be wrong to just add another option to be able to change controls if someone wants to use like "Classic" or "Veteran" settings ect.

🙌 should always be enjoyable for everyone out there, no matter what preferences they have or platform they play on.

Adding another option to change controls doesn't break the world 😉

Yeah that's very true. I just found the helicopter controlls in BF4 to be too complex...at least for me. Now I love to fly in games, and when I eventually sussed out how the controls work in the 2042 beta I loved them. I'm not that of a competitive player...sometimes I am, but I just play game for the fun and for the experience. Whenever I think in my head  I can suss the controlls for helis and jets in battlefield 4 I just completely mess up.

@alexironhide1997 I myself play these games for fun. My gamertag is elevatedbuckle. I play on the series x. See you on the battlefield someday. I'm a boots on the ground type of guy. Love tanking when i get the chance.
  • That's awesome. I do like to play boots on the ground too, but i also like mix my playtime  with the vehicles as well.

Oh what did you say your gameplay was against?

Sorry nothing personal but I suggest you go and try helicopters in Battlefield 3 or 4 on PC first. Describing BF2, 3 or 4 flying as "janky" or "unresponsive" is just a lie. I am not talking about controls, I'm talking about how the heli behaves when you press a certain key.

I don't know how the console games have been, but this PC beta clearly had its flying mechanics dumbed down to the level of consoles. Nowhere near was it as responsive and agile as in earlier PC titles. It was clearly designed for controller players and all the movement was more restricted; i.e. rolling the heli on it's side made the heli fly sideways instead of making it start to roll.

I know they probably won't fix it because they are obsessed with crossplay and because of this have just developed identical flying mechanics for both PC and consoles. Well only time will tell, I do hope joystick controls are properly implemented.

I'd argue has less to do with the difference in control input than the physics of the vehicle models themselves. The Heli's in 2042 are much more nimble due to a feeling of "lightness" in the physics. In BF4 you have to be incredibly precise with your movements as the weighty inertia of the vehicles makes recovering control when thrown off balance much harder than in 2042. Especially in the attack Heli's, which really feel like they have the weight of flying tanks in BF4.

I play BF4 on console and there are many pilots that can consistently do amazing things in the Heli's so they're obviously not limited by the controller. As for myself I can only claim to be minimally competent and often wind up crashing when I try to get fancy even though I've got plenty of time in them. But I played the 2042 Beta on PC with a ps4 controller, I crashed right after takeoff about five times but then started to quickly figure it out and by the end of the second day I was able to pull off maneuvers in attack heli's I couldn't dream of doing in a little bird in BF4.

    Would you prefer to have:

-- attack helicopter feeling like, well, flying tank - because that is actually what it is (7t vehicle without weapons and crew)?

-- little bird being nimbler because (without people and weapons in it) it is 0.7t?

or very distant model where it is more like RC helicopters?

I always felt that little grain of realism (albeit not realistic at all) and accompanied difficulty made battlefields shine.

I for one in BF2042 took little bird and did stationary loops without loosing height. That was the moment I realized a play a bit different game than expected. Little bird is fantastic, especially in strafing while circling targets (BF4). So nimble. It was the intertia that sold the feel of being in an actual vehicle.

I can't believe that it hasn't been done already. It makes no sense at all that battlefield veterans can't select the classic/legacy controls for helis.

I completely understand introducing the new controls for new players to feel comfortable with flying. But that's no reason to remove the option for the classic controls.

You had so much more freedom with the classic controls and if you put in the time to learn how to fly with those controls, it opened many more options for how to play. They should absolutely add the option to change controls back to the classic setting and I can't believe it's even a discussion. JUST GIVE US THE OPTION!

@Lerdog21Even the controls are made right the physics are still so dumbed down on them it won't matter, they will still handle like crap from what we are used to.

They really messed up the physics of everything in this game.
