Re: Now EA confirmed the cross play details!

The wording is up for interpretation, but I read it as crossplay between consoles will always be on, but it's possible to disable crossplay between PC and consoles.

Which makes the most sense, given how easy it is to modify software on PCs compared to consoles.

That is exactly the sense and spirit of it @OskooI_007  !

Because PC and the new gen consoles all can run the same 128 player version of the game, while we also recognize that PC players have the advantage of the m&k controls, plus the much higher FPS and the custom graphic settings you have access to on the PCs.  While the two console platforms can play together on a more equal footing.

  • Amazing news! Good stuff Dice/EA.

I assume it is now a given that Mouse+KB support will be present on PS5 and XSX?

My next hurdle now is to get PS5 to support my Logitech MX Master 3 and MX Keys and I'll be all set for BF2042!! Woot Woot!

(Worst case scenario I'll just have to buy a new mouse+kb that is supported but it's great to know that crossplay is going to be in the game).

  • I’m a little confused on something, but maybe it’s the way I’m reading it?

It appears that old gen (PS4) and next gen (PS5) players cannot play together at all? I expected that we (as a PS5 owner) would be limited to the 64 player versions, but this makes it seem like we won’t be able to play together at all. If so, huge bummer IMO

@Boba_Brett711 It does read that way. There is also this:

“Our intention is to ensure that nothing detracts from the overall experience of playing Battlefield 2042. The main differences between console generations is that we’ve made adjustments to the playable area on the maps to ensure a fluid play experience for Xbox One and PlayStation 4® consoles.”

Which makes it seem that the 64 player maps are going to be pared down versions of the full maps. I suspect this is the limiting factor when trying to facilitate cross play between the console generations… I am sure we will get more information on this soon.
  • This is great news!

I hope it actually works on Xbox..Warzone (cough)

Yes we can play together @Boba_Brett711 !

But you need to purchase the GOLD or ULTIMATE editions of the BF2042 game.

There aka we with a PS5 can decide to run the 64 player version of the BF2042, which is the world of the PS4 also.

Same gameplay fundamentals, just with reduced map sizes, to accommodate with the PS4 limitations vs PS5.   Just as you also today can run BF4 on your PS5.

  • @CyberDyme Gold and Ultimate just include the cross gen versions both, so are you saying I’d have to install both versions and play the PS4 version when playing with PS4 friends? Is that how you read it? If so, not sure that’s much better, hard drive space ain’t what it used to be.

I’ll continue to wait for more details, just seemed a bit confusing how they displayed cross play details with old and next gen together,

    Agreed @Boba_Brett711 ,

Its some weak descriptions we have gotten so far from EA on this.  But yes, the info and the answers we got so far at the event is that the GOLD and ULTIMATE licenses both include the rights/access to both the old-gen and the new-gen console game environments.  What is not clear yet if its working as a single game install, and we then within that single environment can search for and join games in both worlds, so to speak.  Or if we indeed will need to make like two separate installs to be able to play both in the new-gen 128 player environment with the full size maps, but also join friends on old-gen in the smaller 64-player maps.

Based on the announcement also on the BattleHub environment with all remastered maps also to be there fore our pleasure, then I (maybe wrongly) assumed that we would be able to search for and join gameplay in all the environments from within the same single game entity on our new-gen consoles.  I totally get your frustration if that is now not going to be the case, as the new-gen consoles are indeed sparse on SSD space so far on their primary drives...

Already now with just a few games installed, its literally full, so think next investment will have to be a large secondary SSD drive to be attached to it.  As then you can install the game quickly from secondary to primary drive.   Not ideal really, but its the best workaround so far, until Sony come clear on what alternative larger SSD drives we can install ourselves as primaries...

  • when the ps4 released, could you play with ps3 players on bf4?

    No @RNM4010028 ,

Because the game was not developed with cross-play in mind.

    But, more importantly...

Because the PS3 was built using "Cell CPU architecture" which, when taken in tandem with a bundle of many other proprietary components Sony used for it, it meant that the PS4 could not play PS3 games straight out of the box.  The PS4 and PS4 Pro by comparison use a lot of 'standard' off the shelf PC parts, whereas the PS3 did not.

Hence reason why PS3 games simply did not work on PS4.

Later Sony enabled some level of backward compatibility with the 'PlayStation Now' service which allowed you to stream PS3 gameplay to your PS4.  Actually because Sony had a number of PS3s hooked up to a server and then that server streams the game to you in a video stream. You then interact with that game using your controller and the video stream returns to the server to let it know that an interaction has taken place, before firing back the response to the player.  But the quality of the stream and the responsiveness of it both entirely depend on the quality of your internet connection and honestly it was miserable for a first person shooter game like Battlefield.
