To be honest I think it's not that they're going downhill still.

I think of it more like if you're rooting in a cesspit for something you just dropped in it - everytime you think you've found it and pull it out, it's something else you wish you hadn't seen, smelt or touched.

It's the same cesspit. It's just another unpleasant surprise.
