Hey @Stormchoir77,
Let me try to shine some light on the topic.
Battlefield 2042 indeed released for a lot of platforms; the Xbox One (X/S)/PS4, Xbox Series S|X/PS5 and the PC. It is indeed the case that, for the console versions of Battlefield 2042, there are versions available that include something that is called a dual-entitlement. This means that the specific game version includes a version for the old gen consoles (Xbox One (X/S)/PS4) and an upgraded version of the game for the newer consoles (Xbox Series S|X/PS5).
Originally, the game would release with only the Gold/Ult versions including the dual-entitlement offer. However, this was changed some time before the launch to also include the Standard edition of the game, for (I believe) $10 more.
However, there is also a Standard edition of the game available without the dual-entitlement offer. This is the cheapest version of the game, and is only available for the old gen consoles. It's possible that you have purchased this version.
If you have purchased the Standard version that is without the dual-entitlement offer, there's indeed unfortunately not a possibility to upgrade it to another version to include the dual-entitlement (it's not possible to purchase an upgrade either), I am afraid.
The only possibility to 'upgrade', would be to purchase a new copy of the game for the console version you want to play it on, if you decide to upgrade and want to make use of the next-gen features on the current gen consoles.
Regarding your progression; you do not have to worry about this. Battlefield 2042 is the first Battlefield that makes use of cross-progression. That means that if you make progress in one game or version of the game on a certain platform, you can carry that over to another version of the game, on another platform etc. It syncs back and forward.
Hope this helps. 🙂
