@AdamonicAim assist works by snapping the player's crosshair to any target close to it, its a rather violent snap I notice with some single player games, but in multiplayer I notice its a little bit of magnetism to assist the player keep hold of target, preferable among controller players.

I personally have it turned off completely as its makes my aim worse as I fight the aim assist and the enemy player
