The only assault rifle that has been even remotely "overpowered" was the RM-68 pre-nerf. SMGs and even some LMGs still have a faster TTK generally in close combat with much larger magazine sizes available. The only real advantage assault rifles have over SMGs is that you can configure them for ranges that SMGs can't reach. That's why they are the most used weapons. There are no maps that are exclusively close range so you need the ability to fire over various distances as the match progresses. Plenty of people still use the PP-29 exclusively even on larger maps. The Avancys is also incredibly popular, more popular than most of the assault rifles, since it can kill people at extreme ranges that not even assault rifles can hit consistently.

If you think the VHX is "OP", then try the MTAR or AEK out, and those have been around for a long time now.
