Beta dissapointment
I attempted the BF6 beta, in fact I was excited to try it out. Unfortunately, I was out of town for work until the last day of the beta so I got a limited experience. Just enough to be truly disappointed. I attempted to play while away and logged in to find a ping of around 60 reported on the menu screen. This gave me a bit of hope and I jumped into a game. Having not experienced a BF game in many years, I went to the training session and started the game with a mix of players and bots. Once the game started I found my ping jumped to between 200-500. Needless to say, an awful experience of inconsistent hits and jerky movements. The next day I returned and logged in at home with a ping of 46 consistent through the entire game yet somehow the experience wasn't much improved. The hit registration was inconsistent and made every kill feel like more luck than skill. With an online experience, that will occasionally happen and as long as it is rare, I don't complain much however this was anything but rare. The most egregious incident follows.
I move into a room where an enemy had been downed. Small room so I swap to the shotgun. A completely oblivious enemy ran headlong into the room for the revive with no idea I was there. He was close enough that I got the takedown prompt. Knowing he wasn't alone and figuring the takedown would allow his teammates to kill me while in animation lock, I opted to make a quick kill with the shotgun then reposition on the door for his allies. Only instead, I fired a round point blank into his back with 0 damage and no hit marker. I fired a second round to see the same. At this point he is starting the revive making him a stationary target so regardless of ping issues, I would still hit. Two more shots, two more misses. Then his teammate enters and eliminates me almost instantly. In the game prior I had used the shotgun at 5m+ and eliminated three opponents with one hit kills. I understand that I'm not a pro or especially skilled but this is absolutely absurd. How can I justify spending 70usd on a game that doesn't even work? Simple answer, I can't. If they see fit to have a free weekend or another beta round, I will happily give it another chance but as it stands, yet another BF game that isn't worth the money.
I have other concerns about design and gameplay beyond functionality. I am concerned about balance especially with the vehicles and engineers. Having multiple engineers repairing and making a vehicle immortal is absurd. On the flip side, with no class limitations, a tank feels like paper when 6 engineers volley fire like a missile shotgun. Limiting the amount of damage that can be repaired is a simple fix for the first concern. A system of reducing max health such that a hit dropping 25% also limits repair to a max of 90% prevents an 'immortal' tank as eventually it won't be reparable. If the vehicle retreats to a safe zone, having the capability to restore to 100% would be perfectly viable. Limiting the number of RPGs or the number of engineer kits available based on map size would balance the second issue but the latter is a bit rougher since most players are not going to like such limitations even for the sake of improved gameplay.
I have had issues with the "Jets" since I first encountered them in BF2 Wake Island DLC. They are about as realistic as unicorns and have never been well balanced. If you have a pro flying, then it was able to effectively win the game with a single player and the bulk of the core gameplay didn't matter anymore since one team was unable to use vehicles and was constantly being harassed by area damage they couldn't do anything about. If you have anyone else, then the AA will dispose of them so effectively, they might as well not exist. This was especially annoying as they would often be used to air drop into a hard to access area as a sniper then abandoned. The balance was much better when it was called airstrikes on position. I didn't get to a chance to try helicopters in this version so I can't say too much but it looked like with the massive amount of AA since every engineer had man portable anti-air launchers and rpgs, that the helo was reduced to doing awkward strafing runs and wasn't the threat to ground forces and vehicles it should be. This will likely end in the same way as "jets" in which a skilled pilot will loop around the map harassing positions and weakening vehicles while never being in actual danger most of the game.
From what I've heard, one of the more controversial issues is the class system. Personally, I don't see the need to limit weapons to create a class identity since your passive traits and gadget establish the role. From a gameplay perspective, I can understand the desire to create a balance by making more useful team gadgets limit effective fighting power but I don't know how well it actually balances. I tend to see this force players to play assault when they would play medic just to get a better weapon which often negatively impacts teamwork (what little is left in the world of online FPS). Still, unrestricted weapons tends to gear towards a single meta where 90% of players are using a couple weapons which can seem boring and actually limit gameplay options. It's a quandary and boils down to personal taste more than anything else, so I suspect the best option is to listen to the community as a whole. Perhaps something as simple as a poll could provide insight to the leanings and help decide a final direction rather than focusing on the few loudest outcries.
I could continue on a rant with my personal opinions on the FPS genre and game design but I think this addresses the majority of my issues with Beta so I shall leave it here.
