BF6 Helicopter Feedback from a Veteran Pilot – Sluggish, No Practice Range, AA
I have played more than my fair share of the BF6 beta now and can confidently say that helicopters are not fun to use, even after learning how they work. I just wanted to bring this back up to second the many other users who have mentioned having issues and hopefully start some good conversation here.
I am a high-level helicopter pilot in previous Battlefield titles, yet in BF6 the new choppers still feel extremely sluggish and awkward to fly. The best way I can describe it is that they feel front-heavy, especially after picking up speed. I am not sure how realistic this is intended to be, but in comparison, jets feel as good or even better than in previous Battlefield titles, while helicopters seem to have lost overall usability. Regardless of my skill in the pilot seat, the new helicopters simply are not usable in their current state.
The on-site user d1i2o3 suggested adding a Veteran Flight Settings option, and I think that is a great idea. This could give us controls similar to previous Battlefield titles like BF4 and BF2042. Flying in those games was much more controllable, or the classic flight model could simply be the default. A lot of the assisted flying features feel awkward, and in my opinion, do not improve the experience.
On top of that, there is currently no good way to properly practice setting up controls or refining your flying skills. Having a dedicated test range or island like BF4 would be extremely valuable. It would give veteran pilots a place to fine-tune their setups and would go a long way in helping new players learn the basics of helicopter flight. I suspect some of the current design choices were made to make helicopters easier for new players, but without a practice area, those benefits are limited.
For the flight model, it would not need to be an exact copy of the old system, but something closer to it would make helicopters far more enjoyable and functional. Right now, the current handling often leads to constant crashes, even when doing basic things like swooping for cover or trying to gain altitude. This becomes an even bigger problem when factoring in how many different anti-air gadgets and rockets ground players can carry. With the sluggish controls, it is nearly impossible to evade lock-ons or get to cover in time, especially when multiple players are firing on you at once.
