Constructive feedback from week 1
Hey, I haven't had this much fun playing a Battlefield game since BF 3, so I thought I'd leave my honest feedback about what these last 4 days have been. It's as constructive as I can make it. In all honesty, the game is mostly great, but there are still some rough edges, and fixing some of these shouldn't take very long so I hope at least some of these suggestions make it in time for day 1 release.
- Hardcoded hotkeys. Please make all these rebindable.
- Console key, which is using a high profile button (Tilde key, the one above tab) and disabling the console doesn't make that hotkey bindable. This is the most obnoxious one.
- Tier 3 skill, hardcoded to number 6.
- Vehicle seat 1. It has no keybinding option for multiple vehicles, I assume they are hardcoded to F1.
- Multiple menu functions like skipping briefing before a match, or some of the buttons at the bottom of the screen in some places (sorry can't be more specific, it's not like I'm taking notes while playing)
- Action keybinds that would be VERY welcome.
- Revive key that's different from pick up kit. There are multiple times when you want to revive a player, but you pick up a kit from the floor and that gets you both killed or you get the wrong gun. Please split up the action of drag-reviving players from interacting with kits on the ground. Ideally, set the kit pickup action to use the contextual action button instead of the interact button, but it could be a completely new keybind.
- A button to instantly mute all squad members in game without having to do it manually, and without disabling all voice chat.
- Settings that don't work. Please fix them accordingly.
- Sniper "hold breath" mode doesn't work when set to toggle. "Hold breath" only works when set to hold.
- Decoupling tank view from steering. Turret turns when tank turns, no matter if you enable or disable this option. I expect the tank to still look at the same point when rotating the hull when this setting is enabled.
- Settings that don't work as expected (by me).
- Sensitivity settings for vehicles. This is really annoying since most vehicles will have one sensitivity when driving in 3rd person, then aim in 1st person and sensitivity goes down to a crawl. I tried multiple settings, and toggling on-off the option to have relative sensitivity, it's not working as I would expect, e.g. when setting 1st person and 3 person sensitivities to the same values, it should have the same sensitivity.
- Brightness and Contrast don't seem to do anything. Not sure if related to HDR or not, I have HDR on.
- Features that don't work as expected (by me).
- Reversing in tanks is inverted. E.g. if you're turning left and hold S to rear the tank, it will suddenly start turning the other way. Please add an option to reverse this behaviour, so reversing with a tank doesn't change the direction it's turning.
- Vaulting is very inconsistent at certain heights, some jumps sometimes work first try, then they don't work again for the rest of the match.
- Zeroing a sniper feels daunting. Even in the mountain map, camping the nest in F and looking at max distance, there's no more than 250m, yet zeroing goes as far as 500m. I'd rather have 100-300m zeroing in increments of 50m.
- Readied grenades can be stowed away by switching weapons, but it should also work if you shoot or aim.
- Drag-reviving should be cancellable by performing another action that isn't moving, but this is not the case.
- Drag-reviving should revive a little faster if you don't drag the person around. In other words, if you move it should take a little longer than if you just walk up and click them, it would create a lot of situations where you can decide between tactical ress vs positioning your friend first... also not to get your friend to revive in the middle of a crossfire if you're still moving them.
- Loadout change should work at all times. If you are not allowed to switch loadout, just tell the player that it will be updated as soon as possible, e.g. next respawn, or on the spot assuming they are not in danger.
- UI
- The minimap is not aligned correctly. When set to NO ROTATION it should point in the same direction as the global map. I lost track of the amount of time I respawned, went north, only to find out 20 seconds later I was running in a completely random direction because minimap north wasn't the actual north.
- It's really hard to see when a team mate is downed, specially when playing as a support. Unless you're looking straight at them, it's very easy to not see them go down. I've been playing with friends and we are actively paying attention to it, and we tend to miss a lot of downed friends, I bet a lot of people don't even notice their squad mates going down. Please add a ping notification or something similar when a nearby squad member goes down or something similar.
- It's very hard to see if your friend's tank is damaged, everyone just spams the torch and it just gets repaired eventually but that's extremely clunky.
- In the main menu, selecting game modes is annoying, you have to open a menu with lateral scroll, choose a game mode, then press search... Very easily upgradeable to a more welcoming user experience, specially on PC.
- In the Loadout screen, the whole weapon management thing is a bit messy.
- Depending on when you right click a weapon, it may or may not pop a sub-menu where only that gun is present, that you have to click again to go in.
- Attachments can't be removed while hovering over them and pressing a button, you need to click in, and select the no attachment button, which is tedious every time you're checking for alternatives to save points.
- Selecting attachments is a black box, there are only a few meaningless numbers at the bottom right corner with cryptic descriptions like "moderate recoil reduction but worse handling while aimed" and I have no clue what that even means. Some mods will go as far as not change at all, like when a weapon has multiple suppressors that cost different amounts but numbers don't even change at all. The only understandable values are the ones at the button, and you need to press a keybind that's very well hidden below it, which will expand the menu up and show you what the actual numbers mean, all this while wasting a whole 1/4 of your screen to display 4 stats.
- Entering the Shooting range goes to a different view than where I was when I pressed the button.
- There's no hotkey to enter the shooting range, but there's one to exit it somehow... and you can't exit from the escape menu either which was confusing for a bit.
- Modding a gun for one spec mods it for everyone else, which is totally not expected. I may have a long range setup for a rifle I run in my Engineer, but mod it for short range in my Assault. This will be mitigated on release when more guns are available so, for example, we have more than 1 pistol that's shared across all classes, but it's still not working properly.
- You can't assign used items, so this creates a situation where an item is bound to the wrong button. If you're used to having C4 as 1st item but placed it on the 2nd slot you're doomed. Please, allow us to swap positions of equipped gear when we select an equipped piece of gear. Same for guns, when playing assault I sometimes want to trade places between guns, which means I have to assign a different one in one of the slots, move one, then move the other.
- In the settings menu, opening and closing any menu resets the view to the first item. E.g. if you go to mouse/keyboard > infantry hotkeys > Press Esc to go back, then you'll be at a different menu entry, not the keyboard/mouse section.
- In the in-game loadout selection menu, it's a bit hard to select a class properly. It would be very welcome if it was made a little more conveniently, ideally if there were hotkeys to select your kit, e.g. 1 = Assault, 2 = Engineer, 3 = Support, 4 = Recon, or even have buttons to hotswap to a kit like CoD Modern Warfare 2019 had.
- Netcode
- There's a very noticeable desync. Even in King of the hill with only 16 players, it's not rare to die behind a wall by ghost bullets, even in 30ms average latency.
- Graphics
- The game has a strange color scheme, which reminds me of the early release of Company of Heroes 3. That game solve the issue over time so I bet this is the same scenario, something to do with shaders or whatever. This is not a problem in game, but it's a bit distracting in the menu.
- Balance
- I don't want to spend much time giving feedback about this since it's still a Beta, and I bet most people have made it very clear what the current state of the game is, but I'll leave a few comments:
- DMRs are extremely undertuned compared to every other weapon type.
- Helicopters and jets die too easily, it takes half a jet mag to kill another jet, it takes a single missile of which a single engineer can get 5 instantly, and the only map with them right now has (if I'm not mistaken) 2 dedicated antiair emplacements + 1 dedicated antiair mobile platform... Please take some ideas from Caspian Border from BF3 which I still consider one of the best FPS experiences in my whole life.
- Lots of places in maps with extremely one-sided encounters, specially when playing king of the hill. E.g. there are capture points in the mountain map where one team has a whole hill cover and a building to protect them while the other team has to sprint across open field and vault up to get in the point.
- Recon pinging you automatically if you hover over someone for a split second is a bit broken, the spotting cone should be narrowed a little so it needs to at least point at you and not just be in the whole screen. The amount of people I killed because I was randomly aiming around and they just popped up is too high.
- I read somewhere you were moving the spawn beacon from recon to assault, please don't. The whole idea is to be able to take vantage points as recon, you shouldn't follow your friends with shotguns and SMGs, and if you die you can't waste another 2 minutes running around to find another spot. If you want people to use it offensively, give Recon a CQB specialization so they can move with the rest instead of boosting bolt action rifles exclusively.
