keep in mind many bf3/bf4 "vets" played on consoles such as x360 and ps3 which had 24 player limit, not 64.
hence 12v12 rush...etc.
battlefield is back...for the cod kids. (3 and 4 were massive steps toward codification)
Actually the majority of players probably thinks of Bad Company 2 when you talk about BF2. Them not having been born when BF2 was released.
Thing is the smaller modes were cause of the technical limitations that the consoles had especially with 4 being at the gen swap. Wouldn't much getting around it without horrific risks of massive frame drops or crashes, and that's on top of any general launch jankiness.
