AMD Mantle major graphical display problem R9 290 i7 4770k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdauxHlTAwA [youtube.com]

As you can see using Mantle there is a major issue with overlapping images, almost like a transparent glossy glass reflection problem, and it happens all the time and can become much worse looking, however if you switch to low/medium/high graphics settings it goes away. But as soon as you switch to ultra or custom (even if you change all to what high gives) triggers the display issue.

Using DX11 there is NO such problem. This is clearly a problem with Mantle of BF4 and I've suffered with it for over a year. What is it? I'm using an MSI R9 290 Gaming card, but the same issue EXISTS on my wifes PC with an R9 270X, so the problem lies with Mantle and this game. It's happened throughout all drivers/beta/official too. Surely others have had this? Or maybe they are playing small TD maps and don't notice it.

Recorded at 1440p resolution and 30fps due to youtube maximum limit of 30fps at 1440p and higher resolutions. Re-encoded at 120,000 kbps x264. I have merged 2 separate files together into the one video. Before I switch to DX11 I obviously quit the game entirely and re-load the game.

Playing small scale maps you cant see or at-least don't have time to notice the problem as there is no massive distances to see like on conquest/large. It cant just be me having the issue with Mantle API.

DX11 maxes out at 2.9 - 3.2GBish Vram with these settings, Mantle maxes out at 3.2 - 3.5GB usually. Textures and distant objects are shown faster using Mantle and a 10% performance increase, but there is clearly a problem with either Mantle API or BF4 use of it. Tried searching for things like Mantle graphics glitches and other lines but nothing like it came up. However in regards to the 270x of my wifes PC she gets much higher fps using DX11 than Mantle with the same i7 4770k, motherboard etc etc.

It happens in every resolution, full screen, windowed, borderless etc. To easily see the problem go 25 seconds in to roughly 1min 23. I then end game and switch to DX11 as can be seen mid way through the video at 1:24 and repeat similar motion and NO graphical problem.

  • I feel quite dumb now 😛 I just couldn't see this "major graphical problem" from your video!

Really? surely you can see the problem. I have done another video showing the same problem but this time with OSD information and switching graphics presets to prove the problem basicly goes away. This is not just a small problem, this eventually happens all over the screen and is unbearable. It's like someone putting a transparent glaze of glass or something smashed in pieces all over your monitor. DX11 has no such problem.

Ah, now I see it, weird, I haven't seen that on my Mantle setup. I guess it might be a Mantle bug which wouldn't be surprising since Mantle is in beta. Is it in choppers only? I guess it could be a rendering issue with the glass in the chopper.

Hi, no it happens no matter what your doing, on foot, in a vehicle of any kind. Basicly if your playing a small scale map your unlikely to notice or see it. But playing bigger maps you can see it. It's as though the first 60yards or so of your vision is fine, further afield from that it has the problems as seen in the video. But why is it it's basicly going away when switching to lower presets? But sometimes it starts to plague the entire screen like 10 areas throughout the screen showing the problem short medium and long distances, it's unbearable.

If deleting the mantle cache located at: C:\Users\username\Documents\Battlefield 4\cache or a repair in Origin doesn't work I can't think of something that would cause this issue isolated for Mantle at High/Ultra presets. You might be able to change each setting from low to ultra one at a time to find out if a specific setting is doing it and that might help.

iv'e went through the graphic options 1 by 1 and I have found the culprit!

MSAA x2 or x4 activates this problem! Will this be reported to DICE? should I expect a credit for the heads up 🙂

Mantle is currently in Beta and AMD has seems to be moving away from the Mantle API in favor of the new Vulcan API http://www.overclock3d.net/articles/gpu_displays/amd_mantle_may_be_dead/1 so I wouldn't expect this issue to be addressed since devs rarely focus on fixes for beta programs.

My recommendation is to keep MSAA off like you have it or use DirectX.

So how do i report this to Dice though?

  • Post it on the BL forums if you want Dice to read it.

Only EA read here (the sellers and company owner) and Dice (Developers) read there.
