Battle Field 4 (& Future games) mode suggestion

King of the Hill (KotH).

It is sometimes hard to find a middle ground in battlefield map sizes with the game modes. You got the very small domination mode which can prove to be fun, but can also get very crowded and cause the infamous “toilet bowl effect” seen in Call of Duty. On the other hand you got conquest maps that can put the distance of an entire domination map between each flag, and good luck getting there safely or in good time without a vehicle! Other game modes help fill in this gap between the size of domination and conquest. Game modes like capture the flag, obliteration and rush can some times bring this middle ground, but these modes tend to be less played because most players seem to favor the capture location game modes. I have a solution that can bring a medium sized game mode to battlefield that will attract players that are accustom to the conquest game mode. King of the Hill, or KotH, would bring new excitement to old maps and any new ones that are to come. Two reasons KotH will be successful are that it will have a similar but re-visioned feature of the conquest game mode and it will bring localize fighting to an area of interest which will surely make for a lot of intense game play.

In a nutshell, KotH will be conquest with one flag that covers a large area. Each team will have a protected base which will provide a direction of attack and various vehicles that will fit the map geography. The goal will be to secure and defend a large area of interest from the other team. It will be much like tug of war, whichever team has the most players in the area will start winning the capture and cause the enemy’s tickets to bleed. The only thing that should change about the mechanic of the flag is that if there are no players on the flag, or there are an equal amount of players from both sides, then the flag should slowly turn neutral and stop the ticket bleed. In conquest or domination, flags generally can only be capture in a tight area. A flag’s radius in most cases will only be on one floor or room if the flag is in a large building, or in an area that has a cluster of small buildings and other types of cover. Much like real combat, when you want too defend a building from an attacker, you want to have a safe perimeter and have all rooms and floors clear of enemies. Take the map that made BF4 famous in its debut, siege of shanghai, lets talk about how we can make a fun and dynamic localized battle around that sky scrapper for an example.

Trying to capture the top of the high rise building in siege of shanghai and letting the bottom floor’s purpose be to serve a way in which to get up to the top floor by foot makes that building feel much smaller than it is. Make the entire building from the entree ways to the whole roof top one flag. Then put the teams on either side of the building across the bridges, where the other flags would be on the map, and give each team a transport chopper, a rawr and a few light vehicles. Allow the building to the north of the main building to be boarded by choppers or snipers so there are multiple strategies of attack. Leave the entire area in between the bridges open so you can cut off your enemy and attack from behind, but not able to enter their uncap. Suddenly that building just got a whole lot bigger! Put pick up weapons for the defenders to use so they can keep their advantage, put machine gun turrets in areas that make sense for defense and possibly add more cover or obstacles where needed. Siege of shanghai is probably not even the best example for this game mode either.

There are several maps that would be amazing for this game mode, and I plan to draw some up and link them here. This game mode could even revolutionize conquest itself and give future games a new look when we consider control points and the layouts for the capture zone. King of the Hill game mode will be great for any number of players from 2 to 64, and it will only get more intense and satisfying with more players. It will celebrate old flavors from the original map lists and be great for future maps and battlefield games. Lets bring in the king of all game modes, can I get a hoah!?

Map setup examples:

Lancang Dam

Gulf of Oman

Wave Breaker

Zavod 311

Silk Road

  • This sounds like a cool idea to try out, probably as a beta map or mode.

Looks to be a very tactical play.

It would be very interesting to see if EA could do it.

Maybe as a "squad death match" with multiple teams.
