I agree with you 100%. I’ve been doing some research on this since so many people argue the game wouldn’t be fun due to a “lack of advanced vehicles and weapons”, which is totally wrong. First of all everybody, there were several vehicles EA and Dice could play around with. There were cavalry battalions, “war wagons” (which were reinforced with metal and had tiny slits for soldiers to poke their guns through), and even hot air balloons used for reconnaissance. Plus the Civil War was the age of the ironclads, which would be perfect boat vehicles to add into the game because they’re armored, are mounted with cannons, mortars, and Gatling guns. Submarines were also introduced during the Civil War, and while not very effective, they could go shallow enough to spy and even plant bombs beneath enemy ironclads. Armored siege trains were also used, though they didn’t have machine guns, they were reinforced with armor and could hold many troops to shoot through slotted openings. The siege trains also housed cannons, large mortars, and Gatling guns similar to the ironclads. So this would be a perfect land vehicle. And in regards to weapons, there were several shotguns, muskets, revolvers, self loading rifles, bolt action rifles, and repeating rifles introduced, as well as grenades. And as I’ve already mentioned a few times, Gatling guns were also used in the civil war, which were nearly what we call machine guns today. They could fire several rounds per minute and came in many sizes. Larger sizes would be mounted on vehicles and wagons, or on wheels like a cannon, and smaller variants could be held and used like automatic weapons. Now while I will say that having these things in the game will be accurate, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be fast paced and fun. But Dice and EA can take some creative liberties for the sake of fun to take away a little from the accuracy. For example, making reloading for weapons and cannons slightly easier or faster, adding things to vehicles to balance them and make them more fun, such as adding bombs to the hot air balloons. They could also make the Gatling gun variants maybe shoot a little faster than in reality. These are things that don’t take away too much from the historical accuracy but still allow players to have fun in the game. As we’ve seen they have done this with Battlefield 1, and they are definitely doing it with Battlefield 5, plus all games have a certain level of inaccuracy and reality. Map design and campaign should be fairly easy for EA to figure out, but overall this concept for a game would be awesome, and people would adjust and enjoy it. Hell you could even simply title it ‘Battlefield: Civil War’ and charge 60 bucks and I guarantee this game would do well. The trailer would probably be amazing too if they did it right.
