Extreme stuttering: CPU + GPU drops

Hi all,

I’m a fairly new player (29 hours). For the first 25 hours of gameplay, I had no technical issues whatsoever with the game. Recently, I’ve started having extreme stuttering where the frame rate drops to 5-10 and becomes unplayable for a few seconds before the frames go back up to 90+. This usually happens in busy multiplayer environments with 40+ players.

I’ve tried reducing the graphics setting to medium, but the problem still persisted. Tried with DX12 both on and off, but no change there either.

Going into the Task Manager, I noticed that I have significant drops in CPU and GPU usage whenever the stuttering occurs. See attached images.

I have an Alienware laptop (purchased just one month ago) with the following specs:

I7 7820HK 2.90 GHz
32 GB RAM
GeForce GTX1080 8GB

Any tips on how to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello again everyone,

    I have finally been able to solve the problem.

    Turns out the CPU clock drops came back even after the BF1 Easter Update, so I decided to install MSI Afterburner and record temperatures, voltages, and clock speeds during a regular play session to try and troubleshoot the problem further. By doing this, I found out that my in-game stuttering events coincided with the CPU dropping to EXACTLY 800 MHz clock speed. After doing some research on Alienware forums (I have an Alienware 17R4), I learned that this behavior is consistent with CPU throttling when CPU temperatures are too high. Lo and behold, MSI Afterburner also showed that my CPU was reaching a maximum temperature of 91 C right before it was being throttled down to 800 MHz each time.

    I bought a cooling pad for the laptop and was able to drop my CPU temperature from 91 C to 80 C while playing BF1 online in Ultra settings. This in turn has stopped the CPU from throttling and has solved all of my stuttering and FPS problems.

    Hey @paperplane36,

    Sorry to hear about these Stuttering issues you've been experiencing.

    However, have you checked to make sure that you have the Origin In-Game Overlay turned off in the Origin Launcher?

    This is known to cause some FPS drops if you have it enabled.

    Also, what do you have your Frame Rate Limiter set at in your in-game settings?

    If it's on "unlimited", make sure you try setting it to 120 or less, depending on what your Laptop can handle.

    Try these steps, and let us know if you still need assistance.

    Hi @iluminatethesky,

    I tried turning off the Origin overlay, but the problem still persists. I keep getting random CPU+GPU drops during gameplay.

    I apologize you're still experiencing this issue.

    Have you checked your Frame Rate Limiter in your in-game settings like I mentioned above?

    Try setting that to 120 or less, depending on what your system can handle.

    Yes, I have it set to 120. As far as in-game settings go, I’ve pretty much exhausted all possible options but unfortunately the problem hasn’t gone away.

    @paperplane36,

    I apologize you're still experiencing this.

    Have you done a Hard Reset on your Router? I would unplug everything for a few minutes, and plug it back in.

    I do this at least once a month to keep everything running smoothly.

    I don't think it's your PC Hardware causing this issue, but try resetting your Router.

    Also, if you'd like, you may contact EA Support via Live Chat to see if they have more suggestions for you.

    He was having similar issues as you, and also uses an Nvidia GPU.

     

    Here's what he did:

    "After a lot of testing an monitoring I did find one thing: Geforce auto adjusts performance (clock, fan speed, etc), which changes radically even during game play.

    I went into NVIDIA Control Panel, and under manage 3D settings I set the option "Power Management" mode to "Max. Performance". Since then I am getting a stable and constant 60 fps (yeah im using the framerate limiter), on all maps."

    Hi everyone,

    It seems that after today’s Easter Update, the problem may have gone away. I was able to play 3 rounds this evening with no stutters whatsoever.

    I’ll update this thread towards the end of the week to confirm whether the problem has been solved.
