Ok, so I'm craving to play this so I did a little test. Battlefield 1942 original multiplayer demo from year 2002 works perfectly, no need to configure anything. The problem has most likely something to do with Origin.
On another forum, someone suggested that the Origin account itself is the problem. So, on some accounts the game works and on some it doesn't - it has nothing to do with the PC you're using. So if anyone has a friend with working BF1942 install, could you try it on your PC with his/her account and see if it works.
