Ok guys listen. I HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM!
I contacted an EA advisor and I did the following steps:
How to create an EA Classic Name
1. Go to Pogo.com.
2. Click on "Register" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions and create a Pogo account under
your current Origin email address.
4. Navigate to https://profile.ea.com and login using your EA Master
ID/EA account.
Note: If you get directed to Origin.com, please go back to
https://profile.ea.com
5 . Click on "Add Persona" under "Select a Default Persona".
6. Select the radio button next to “existing EA Classic Screen Name”.
7. Login with your created Pogo account name (or email address) and password.
8. Click on "Add Persona". The Pogo screen name should now appear in
the Persona list with “(EA Classic Screen Name)” displayed beneath.
After you have done this, contact an EA advisor at http://help.ea.com.
The advisor says that you have to log out @ Origin.
Now he is going to fix the issue.
Quote from EA Advisor: "Yes, I added entitlements on your account. Also, creating EA Classic name helps to resolve your issue ."
If he is done. Log in again and here you go, the game starts.
Before the advisor fixed the problem I recognized that I did not have a product key for BF 1942 although it is free to play. After the fix, I now have a product key.
This should work for all of you guys.
Please write your result here.
Tim
P.S.: This issue does not occur because of your system! It's because of the issue mentioned above.

I did exactly that, game started working. Still need to test multiplayer. Like you said, you need entitlements, as without them, ssleay32.dll won't show up in the game directory. or something like that. regardless, seems to be the only decent fix. as long as you don't mind 60+ minutes of waiting for a rep, who refuses to listen to what you claim to be the problem up until the very end....

Screw it. Trying to contact them.
Update: Waited an hour, got someone who didn't respond for another 30 minutes. I was then transferred to a helpful guy who talked me through all the troubleshooting steps I had just done (and said I had done) for about half an hour. I then mentioned that someone had said something about "entitlements" being needed for Origin to properly recognize ssleay32.dll to which he responded that he had looked through the entitlements and none applied. I was then told to restart my computer with a fresh boot without other processes and was sent an email for further troubleshooting steps involving UAC (which I had done) and CHKDSK (which didn't change anything) and finally a reinstall (which I had done). All in all, I'm back where I started. Thanks EA, you're now 0 for 4 for troubleshooting games over chat (four f*****g games!). Uninstalling origin.

You know, Im sitting through the exact same thing. I waited an hour to be walked through the same steps I tried already. This is absurd.

Thanks for taking the time to respond on this and post a detailed and legitimate solution like that. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Try tthe contents of this zip file. It worked for me. Unzip into your drive letter Program Files\Origin Games\Battlefield 1942. When asked to over write say yes.
I have some other stuff but try this first.
