My brother and I cannot play together (UPnP problem).

My brother and I cannot connect to the same server to play together. We are on the same LAN. I had the same problem with BF3 as soon as I changed my router, so it must be a UPnP problem. This router does not support port triggering and I'm assuming it doesn't support full NAT, so I may just have to upgrade. But, before I drop cash on a new router, I'd like to make sure there isn't a fix out there.

I have tried disabling UPnP on the router AND disabling the UPnP and SSDP services, as well as disabling network discovery. I have used the regedit fix from BF3 by going to HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/GamesUX/Games/ and adding "+clientport 2xxxx" to the BF4 "AppExePath" entry. I have also added "+clientport 2xxxx" to the game properties in Origin. I have updated punkbuster, used different browsers, and repaired my install. I have also put one PC in the DMZ but that keeps the other computer from connecting whatsoever. Nothing seems to work.

If there is no current solution, it would be good to consider including a user.cfg file to allow the client to specify which port(s) he would like to use. Many other games have this option.

It would be awesome if anyone knows of a potential fix. Thanks in advance.

  • Some routers can have troubles with routing the data correctly when you are two on the same network even though it should work - sometimes it works if you setup your network with static IP's for all devices instead of randomly assigned.

If that doesn't work there might be another solution - now you don't mention what router you use but if updating your router with the latest firmware doesn't work you might want to change the entire firmware. Lots of routers are fitted with rubbish firmware and this have made custom firmwares appear. Personally I've thrown away the horrible firmware on my D-Link Dir-615d router and replaced it with firmware from http://www.dd-wrt.com - now it's perfect even though 615d is a cheap router.

Remember: flashing firmware on your router can ruin it if something goes wrong, but if you are going to buy a new one anyway you got nothing to loose 🙂

Thanks for the response. I have tried assigning static ports to both of our PC's, are you suggesting assigning one to every device on the network?

I was hoping using some type of open/aftermarket firmware would be the solution but my router isn't supported by any firmware I can find. It is a Medialink 300N.

    Thanks again.
