Re: Battlefield 1942 - Invalid Serial Key

EDIT: This process was now automated. If you encounter the "Invalid cd key issue" please run repair (right-click on Battlefield 1942 in Origin). For more information please see this post: http://answers.ea.com/t5/Battlefield-1942/Battlefield-1942-Invalid-Serial-Key/m-p/179498#M139

Ok, I finally got mine working !

1) Click start menu, type regedit in the search field (or hit windows+r if you do not have vista/7)

2) Navigate to the following section(s) depending on your OS,

For those of you that don't have an Origin folder located in either of these two locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\Origin\Battlefield 1942\ergc (FOR 64bit OS)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Origin\Battlefield 1942\ergc (FOR 32bit OS)

3) You need to create it yourself. I have Win 7 x64, so I made an Origin folder (also known as a "key" in the registry) under Electronic Arts.
To create this "folder", right-click on Electronic Arts and then choose "New" and then "Key". Now it should allow you to give it a name, rename it as Origin.

4) Next, right-click on the Origin "key" you just made and again pick "New" and then"Key". Give this new key a name of Battlefield 1942.

5) Next, right-click on the Battlefield 1942 "key" you just made and again pick "New" and then "Key". Give this new key a name of ergc

6) Next, click on the ergc "key" , on the right hand side you'll see it has a string value called "Default". Right-click it and then choose "Modify".

Now you need to copy your product key from Origin and paste it as the new modified value.

To find your product key, right click Battlefield 1942 in Origin, then choose Game information/detail, and you should see your product key (listed on the right hand side)

7) You do NOT need to include spaces, just copy and paste the key and click on "Ok".

Now you can close the registry editor, run your game and you should be able to connect to any server. I managed to connect to my dedicated server at last after I did this !

Hope it helps you guys :-)

Do you have any screen captures of your regedit screen?

BTW, I put my original CD-Key that I own.

And it still give me the "Invalid CD Key"

I may have to install my original game just to be able to play.

I don't think EA/Origin thought this one thru when they released it.

Did they even test it before the re-release?

When I saw this, I was excited, knowing that I might actually be able to finally play the game. However, something always goes wrong for me.

Going through the steps, I noticed i already had an Origin folder in the location for 32bit OS, so I went straight away to finding the product key. So, I right clicked Battlefield 1942 in Origin, but looking through the options, there wasn't anywhere for me to choose Game information/detail. The only options available were: Collapse, New, Find..., Delete, Rename, Export, Permissions..., and Copy Key Name. Any ideas on what's wrong and what to do?

  • No, you're mixing up the instructions. If I have some time today I'll make scrrenshots and post them.

    Hi all,

I've merged your posts into this thread to keep the forum organized.

The Studio and the Origin team are looking into this right now, we will update you when we have more information at hand. In the meantime, and if you are a bit tech-savvy, you might want to try the workaround posted by ston3cold in this thread: http://answers.ea.com/t5/Battlefield-1942/Battlefield-1942-Invalid-Serial-Key/m-p/175664#M50

    Thank you for your patience.

    Hey all,

Great news. We've identified the configuration error that was causing this and fixed it.

If you are still in this state there is no need to edit the registry to fix this now.

In your Origin My Games tab, right click on the game tile for BF1942 and select Repair Install.

This should resolve the issue. See you on the Battlefield!

Hmmm, I uninstalled BF1942. I removed anything to do with the Registry fix that was supplied. Re-downloaded and Origin installed the game.

Still getting the "Invalid CD Key" error. So I did the "Repair Install", although I figure a fresh install would already include the fix...

Still getting the "Invalid CD Key" error.

BTW the server I was trying to connect to was one of the EA - US East - PUBLIC - Mult

I tried a few servers under the EA - US East - PUBLIC - Mult.

I did FRAPS the event. and will post on Youtube so that we can see the issue.

There is a problem with having to call EA for the key... if it's free the key should no longer be required, period, and all checks against should be completely removed.

The registry edit option doesn't work because there's no registry key in there!

And without a registry key that SHOULD be in there the ereg software is useuless.

So EA/Origin admits there is a problem with the Digital release of BF1942?

  • YES!!! This worked! Thank you VERY much for this fix! How you, or anyone, found this out is amazing. ๐Ÿ™‚

    THANK YOU!

    i found that going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\Origin\Battlefield 1942\ergc (FOR 64bit OS)
and modifying the ergc file by copying and pasting your key. in stead of making the new folders worked as well.

It still doesn't work. The error message comes up in a different box (I think) but it still says Error Invalid CD Key. I am using Windows 7 64 bit, if that makes any difference
