You don't need to pay attention to anything in that HUD space unless it's your speed for dogfighting (313- in the top left corner of the HUD in 1st person). Remember this is not a simulator, so not all of that matters. If you fly enough, you'll know how high/low you are to the sky box (so you don't get stuck).
