Note if you haven't figured out how to unfreeze without doing a hard shutdown of your system next time just eject the game and wait until your PS3 reboots. This will save your system from further issues like corrupting your harddrive.
This is actually what I have done. Playing the game will heat up your PS3, causing freezes. I put a small fan that I run over it. Works great now. I also used about 6 games to prop it up off the shelf. 3 on each side. This just helps the air flow over it better, and keep it cooler.
