Skylake Intel Core I5 100% Utilisation, all the time...

Hi,

I have a Intel Core i5 6600 CPU, 16Gb DDR3 1866Mhz Ram, Nvidia GTX1070, 512GB SSD & Windows 10 64bit

When i play multiplayer my CPU usage sits at 98/100% ALL the time, this causes some frame drops to 38Fps at times depending on what is happening in the game.

My normal frame rate is around 90Fps @ 2560x1080.

Surely this utilisation is not normal, i dont have any games that use this amount of CPU for one application.

I have recently purchased Forza 3 and run that at Ultra settings, CPU usge never goes above 78-80%.

Plus, the consoles run BF1 just fine, with 1.6Ghz CPU's!

Is this something that will be patched or is it "Working as intended?"

Thanks.

  • I've got a 1070 and a 6600K@4.4Ghz@1440p and it has 98-100% utilization as well. I don't have these drops. 100% utilization is great, just means the game is very well optimized and is in itself not a bad thing.

That being said, there might be a bug causing FPS drops at high utilization which has been reported all over the place and is being looked into.

In the meantime you might want to look into closing in game overlays and perhaps try if limiting the max FPS helps.

    STEP 1

Create an empty text file called user.cfg in C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4\ (or where you might have your game saved) and in that file and add this text if you have a 144Hz monitor:

    gametime.maxvariablefps 145

or this text if you got a 60Hz monitor

    gametime.maxvariablefps 61

If you have another monitor take it's hertz frequency change the number above so it's Hz+1

    STEP 2

If STEP 1 does not work try changing the values in the user.cfg file to lower values. Keep lowering them until the problem hopefully doesn't happen. I'm aware this will lower the quality of your experience as you will get lower FPS so see this as a temporary solution until Nvidia / AMD / DICE comes out with a fix.

  • You could try checking task manager to see if it is just BF1 hogging the CPU.

if it is BF1 and theres no FPS hiccups while playing dont worry about it.
