I definitely agree with the notion of the customization, but I don't think Battlefield 1 is a good example. It offers a lot of customization options that don't really suit the game, especially considering the inaccuracies related to player characters. Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3 in my opinion, represent the ideal balance when it comes to customization and overall game design.
